Finnish soprano Minna Nyberg is a versatile singer who has specialized in the art of baroque singing. Her soft tone with a rich use of vocal colors and her impressive talent for interpreting texts make her an interesting and appreciated Finnish artist. Nyberg has sung several soprano parts in the works of Bach, Buxtehude, Couperin, Gilles, Handel, Vivaldi and Zipoli. She has toured in Europe (e.g. Concertgebouw in Amsterdam) and Japan (e.g. Tokyo Opera City Hall) with La Petite Bande conducted by Sigiswald Kuijken and Collgeium Vocale Gent conducted by Philippe Herreweghe. In January 2018 she sang in Göteborg Baroque’s production of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo. Nyberg has studied baroque singing with baroque specialist and singer Susanne Rydén since 2007.
Nyberg’s devotion to and strong belief in the importance of the poetry in vocal music led her to study poetry recital for Eilakaija Sippo in 2005. In the same year she won first prize in the Finnish national poetry recital competition In Eino Leino’s Footsteps (Eino Leinon jalanjäljillä). Since then Nyberg has continuously played and sung parts in dramatized productions.
Nyberg’s love for baroque music and her continuous work with dramatized concerts awakened her interest in the art of baroque gesture, which she has studied with specialist Sigrid T’Hooft since 2013. Since then Nyberg has successfully performed several gasture concerts e.g. Love, Madness and Despair, Le Caffé, Hulluna sinuun (Crazy for you) and Nine Divinities - An Evening Inspired by the Muses. Among foundations which have supported Nyberg’s work in this art form are Swedish Culture Foundation, Suomen kulttuurirahasto, Konstsamfundet, Taike, Nygréns Stiftelse and Oskar Öflunds Stiftelse. Minna Nyberg is at present the only artist in Finland who performs the art of baroque gesture on a professional level.
In addition to being a freelance singer Nyberg works as a singing teacher. She regularly teaches private students in the art of singing and is also an appreciated choach of choires. Nyberg coaches Female Voice Choire Lyran and The Academic Male Voice Choir of Helsinki in vocal technique.
Nyberg graduated as a singing teacher from Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in 2008. She has studied classical singing for Tanja Kauppinen-Savijoki, Ulla Ståhl-Grapes and Matti Pelo. Nyberg has also studied musicology at Åbo Akademi University and received her Master’s Degree in 2005.
